Where do we draw the line?

What's here came from the map in the Reed Pocket Dictionary, with the addition of Te Atiawa, who figure in the top 10 by membership.

The Confederation website shows many more tribes than what we currently have here. Should we include them?

Legislation currently before Parliament adds two hapu to the list of separate "iwi" for purposes of the fisheries assets allocation. Should we include them? Robin Patterson 02:09, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Now added more, so as to include most of the iwi listed by Statistics New Zealand. Those are based on what individuals told the census authorities, so are clearly at least as valid as any dictionary map.

Mematanga: nama

Some of the iwi cannot get very accurate numbers for a particular census date. Reasons include:

1. Respondents could list as many different origins as they wished. One notes that some of the people appearing on Whakaata Māori have three tribal links shown below their names.
2. Respondents were asked to specify the locality of the iwi. Some did not, and are listed as "unspecified location". If one adds those to the numbers who specified a location for the iwi of that name, there will be some double-counting based on point "1" above.

A few of the iwi named on the Reed map have no figures from published Statistics New Zealand material. A couple of those have names similar to Stats names.
