Hi Robin, sorry to see you are being trolled on the Korero. Don't let it put you off. I've left a message at MediaWiki talk:Linktrail that hopefully you can deal with. I see you passed 100 hundred articles last month, so congratulations on your first milestone! Angela 13:32, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

(Robin said: "Maori Wikipedia has lost its "Community Portal" page sidebar link for some skins ...") Eeek. It's not there in the other skins. I don't know whether to report it as a bug. It's not a huge issue on Wikipedia - it just means you don't have a link to the community portal but on wikis such as the Foundation wiki or Wikia, where we've used the MediaWiki namespace to customise the sidebar, it causes much bigger problems. And I hadn't noticed those problems until you pointed it out. I don't know what the solution is to this right now, but I will let you know if I find a fix for it. Angela 02:22, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Please delete this. I'd rather not have pictures of me on wikis I do not regularly watch for vandalism. I'm also not likely to remember it's here should I want to update the picture or remove my photo from Wikipedia. Thanks. Angela 13:36, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Haven't forgotten takatā

This is just to let you know that I am indeed working on some things for the Maori Wikipedia - I haven't forgotten. However, my attempt to make a map of the various iwi is proving more difficult than I thought, since I keep getting conflicting information from different maps. Also, there seems to be debate about exactly which groups qualify as an iwi. Do you have any suggestions as to what the most "authoritative" source might be? I've had to re-do the map several times, based on conflicting data, and I still haven't got anything looking reasonable. -- Vardion 10:08, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Well, it took me far longer than I though it would, and I'm still not sure whether I've made the best decisions regarding what to display, but I've finally made some sort of map for the various iwi. I managed to find two sources which generally agreed, and decided that this is probably as good as I can get — I've added the map to Rārangi iwi. Now that the map's out of the way, I might actually find something to do that actually uses Maori... -- Vardion 05:20, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Translation of the week takatā

Currently we have started a project on meta.wikipedia to get an article translated in as many wikipedias as possible every week. The article will be about a subject that usually gets rarely translated and has a lot of links to other subjects. Currently we have no-one to translate in your language. If someone is interested to participate please see: meta:Translation of the week You can also submit articles from your own languages there that you think deserve translation, but have a small chance of it. The articles must not be to short and not to long and have lots of links to possible other articles! en:user:Waerth

Umlaunt, search engine optimisation, old browsers takatā

Hi, sorry for the trouble, and for not knowing a word of Maori (on my list of languages to try to learn). I think a possible solution might be to place the equivalent umlaut-character form inside of a hidden HTML comment, like so: <!--Te Wänanga o Aotearoa-->. That way Google should pick it up but humans won't see it. To be sure that this does work, an experiment may be performed. As for older browsers, an upgrade should solve the problem, though that is not always an option with some (very old) operating systems. I recommend Mozilla Firefox (a Maori version is in the making). reversion takatā

I will remind you, Mr Patterson, that this is not the "Wikipedia for the Maori people" but rather the "Wikipedia in the Maori language". Similarly, the Irish, Hawai'ian, Scots Gaelic, and other Wikipedias where the language is spoken by only a minority of the ethnic population, all use no or very little English. --24.251.198.251 8 July 2005 00:31 (UTC)

Maori Wikipedia takatā

Hi Robin,

Please, quit re-placing English so prominently on this Wikipedia.

To your response that most Maoris speak better English than Maori (you made the same argument on sm.wiki)...

I have it from a higher authority (although strictly speaking, it was "off the record", ie not an official communiqué) that you are very wrong and that Wikipedias are for languages ONLY.

I mentioned this specific case.

My query, as well as the responses, were all on an official mailinglist (and public, at that).

Responses from notable people: Jimbo Wales (co-founder and "godking" of Wikipedia): [1] Florence Nibart-Devouard, alias Anthère (Wikimedia board member, originally from fr.wiki): [2]

From these responses (and others from "less notable people", all of whom were in complete agreement that Wikipedias are for languages only, NOT ethnic groups, cultures, nations, or any other non-linguistic division), I think it is clear that if you continue to abuse your administrative powers here so as to keep a prominent placement for English-language content in the Maori-language Wikipedia, I will take the nessecary steps to request that your privelages here be revoked.

Note, please, my objections to your application for adminship at sm.wiki, and the speedy response with which it was greeted, resulting in swift revocation of your admin privelages there. (actual objections are enumerated here; responses are located here.)

Despite all this, I recognise that small Wikipedias in general and Pacific languages' Wikipedias in particular are in need of special attention, and it is not my hope that you simply leave but rather that you cease improper prominent placement of text in the "wrong language". Obviously, most of the work on mi.wiki is yours, including the content that is actually in Maori, and you have helped to keep other Pacific languages clear of vandalism for some time.

Best
Mark Williamson
(haw:, haw.talk; for other contributions to pacific-language Wikipedias see Chamorro, where all Chamorro-language content was posted by me [though checked by a native speaker], and various anonymous reversions of spam and vandalism at all inactive Pacific languages' Wikipedias)

Encouraging contributions from marae members takatā

I am appending this here, not that it is the best place, nor a follow on of the above, but more that the heading is correct. I have been very surprised at the number of marae's list on the net at [3] eg [www.oldhttp://www.oldfriends.co.nz/InstitutionPhotos.aspx?institution=110988|Kakahi] where I know the majority of the "oldfriends conttibutors, from even such a tiny village.
NZ (even Kakahi) not so IT backwards as some might assume...
No surprise to people who read internet news - NZ was in the top six countries last year in terms of the proportion of the population who had used the internet in a specific month. Robin Patterson 06:33, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
I do wonder if some of these subscribers may want to become wiki Maori contributors and translators. Can we post a message to all the marae's listed to take a look at wiki, maybe even create a stub for each?

NevilleDNZ 15:53, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, Neville. I've added a more precific subheading above.
I've made numerous approaches to tribal organisations and would be delighted to have help from anyone in that regard. Please see (and if successful add to) the discussion on Wikipedia:Körero under the headings "Pakeha promotion of this site" and "Mention on New Zealand's main community website" and below that last one.
If you can enlarge the Kakahi article (using much of what you have on the English version) and include even more links to people and hapu, ready for instant creation of new stubs that can grow to be articles, there's a chance you can make it easy for your acquaintances to write a bit. Kia kaha!

More lies from node-ue takatā

The posting referred to above says this:

Hi all,

I would like to ask for some clarification of Wikimedia policy.

Is it considered acceptable to have spearate Wikipedias for different cultures and peoples rather than languages? Are any existing Wikipedias considered in this capacity?

Robin Patterson has asserted on mi: that rather than a Wikipedia in the Maori language, it's intended as a Wikipedia for the Maori people, and thus extensive usage of the English language is OK or even good, since only 5% of Maori people are fluent in Maori.

Similarly, he wanted to add English content to the Samoan Wikipedia because "tens of thousands" of Samoans speak English fluently. It should be noted that neither of these languages are his native languages. Maori, he lists as a Babel template level of 1 (his French and German are better), yet he is the sole administrator at the Maori Wikipedia. He noted on his Samoan userpage that he knows only a handful of Samoan words, yet he tried to apply there for sysop anyways.

Mark

Facts:

  1. I have never asserted that this is "a Wikipedia for the Maori people"
  2. I added the first non-main-page article to the Samoan wikipedia, and most of it was in Samoan
  3. I am not the sole administrator here
  4. I did not apply for sysop status on "sm" - I merely pointed out that it had no sysops and invited people to consider my record here
  5. In his comment of a few days ago, node said "To your response that most Maoris speak better English than Maori ... I have it from a higher authority ... that you are very wrong... " - well, he's clearly wrong there too, because official statistics show that over 600,000 people claimed to be "Maori" at the 2001 census but fewer than 200,000 claim any ability with the language.

Other untruths from node are too numerous to list. As for his claim that he helps other Pacific languages - why doesn't he leave this one alone and look after "to", which has had some purely English-language articles dominating its half-dozen "articles" for weeks if not months?

Haere mai takatā

Hi Robin, > We've met somewhere else recently, I think... That's right. We have met in the discussion on wikipedia-l about node_ue's complaint over his one week of forced absence of mi.wikipedia.org. And I dared to roll back one of his changes in the main page.

I live in Hamburg and I am very involved in the Low Saxon wikipedia and in the translation of KDE into Low Saxon.

in September 2001 I spent a beautiful holiday in NZ together with my wife. Every now and then we even thought about moving there for some time.

As Maori is also a minority language there are parallels in the language situation between Low Saxon and Maori and as I like foreign languages, I have had a look at Maori and find this language very interesting.

Apart from languages I am an active member of my church (Seventh-Day-Adventist) here in Hamburg.

And I earn my living as a computer programmer.

Some questions takatā

Hi Robin,

I have some questions/ideas

1) Wikipedia:Community_Portal could be extended with a section where to find online information about the Maori language:

  • free online dictionaries like the Ngata dictionary which is nice, because it does not only offer word pairs, but it also gives a complete sentence in English vs. Maori).
  • free grammar introduction. I have been searching the web for some time but did not find any, which is a pity. An online dictionary alone does not help so much, as the grammar of Maori is very different from English.

2) "Rerekētanga" is supposed to be a translation of "recent changes". I have found out via the Ngata dictionary that "Rerekētanga" means difference like in "There is a clear difference between night and day." I find other words for "change" like "whakarerekē(tia)" and "whakanekeneke" ("What changes throughout Aotearoa are there." <=> "He aha nga whakanekeneke kai te hora i Aotearoa.".) Besides "Rerekētanga" does not contain the part "recent". 3) I am surprised how little of the editor interface is translated (user page, discussion, edit this page, history, move, watch etc.) There is a list of Maori computer terms in [4]. It contains word like edit, user etc. Maybe this could help to translate the technical terms of the user interface.

Kind regards,

Heiko Evermann 21:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

(Robin responded on Heiko's talk page.)

some replies from Heiko; and Robin's responses takatā

Hi Robin,
1) I noticed some of your edits in nds.wikipedia.org, but so far I have not had a closer look at them. You say you have de-1. How much of the Low Saxon do you understand? How far are de and nds related from your point of view?

I find "nds" very like German and easy to "read", with comprehension variable but a bit below my "hoch-De" (which is not at all surprising, because I studied German at University and eventually passed "Stage 3"). Some whole "nds" sentences I feel confident I have understood. And I have a few words off by heart now (though their plurals, etc, are still shrouded in mystery!). It's probably closer to English than German is, because of not having the second sound-shift 1200 years ago.

2) You seem to be involved in the Maori language for quite some time. I even found a wiki somewhere (I have the link on my other computer...) that stated that you are involved in the Maori language commission? It is a pity that you still rate yourself mi-1. Maybe that is appropriate, but it still is sad somehow. Is Maori so difficult? What made you become interested in Maori? As far as I remember, you have no ethnic Maori background.

I've written a couple of times to the Maori Language Commission (and other influential bodies) to mention "[[mi:" and invite support of some sort; friendly replies, but not much more than that from the Commission. As the language is official and spoken (at times) by over 100,000 "fellow-countrymen", some study of it is logical for a bloke who has dabbled in about 20 languages. But I started seriously only last year and I'm not spending many hours a day at it! So it may be a while before it's appropriate to upgrade my "mi-1".

3) I read that 15% of the NZ population are Maori, and of them only 20% are fluent in the language. That makes 120.000 people. I wonder why there is so little support from the Maori community for your wikipedia.

So do I. But, as a reassuring contrast, 27 million people speak Sundanese, which still has virtually a one-man-band building its WP su:. And "nds" has millions of people who understand it but only half a dozen speakers (and a bunch of outsiders) recently active on its WP.

4) Concerning the grammar: maybe it would be possible to extend the article en:Maori language or even add an article "grammar of the Maori language" there.

Both would be a good idea. I've added a sentence now and again but am barely qualified.

To me as an outsider it is strange that your grammar book is from 1894.

It came from my late Uncle's estate. He was born in 1901, so it was OK when he was using it. Apparently it (a fourth edition) was virtually unchanged from the first (1842) edition. I do have more recent (bigger) books at home: not so easy to carry on the train.

Is that still up to date?

I think 95% of it is. I make notes of my questions as I read it.

When I was in NZ in September 2001, I looked for Maori books in several book stores. The only thing that I found was some books for Maori lessons at school. I did not see novels translated into Maori and I did not find any newspapers in Maori. There was not even a Maori column in the newspapers.

Larger or specialised bookstores do now stock books in or about Maori language and culture. For example, two I know (at opposite ends of Wellington's main shopping street, Lambton Quay) have several shelves (about 2m x 2m). There are a few magazines too, mostly put out by the larger tribes or confederations. As nearly all Maori read English well or competently, as I've mentioned, "novels translated into Maori" could be a waste of effort. Some writers are now writing complete works in Maori. But the language has been official for only 30 years and is taking a while to revive.

For Low Saxon we have hundreds of little books with short stories (usually humorous), and a usual book store here in North Germany will at least have a dozen of them on the shelf. I think that this state for Maori is very strange, as it is your second official language. Even your national anthem is sung in English and Maori. I heard it in a church service in a pentecostal church somewhere on the South Island just a few days after 9/11. (I arrived in NZ on September 11th just a few hours before the attacks in New York.) I was a bit puzzled that a national anthem was sung in church. Nobody would even dare to think about that here in Germany. But after all your anthem is a prayer, and BTW a nice one.

Yes, it's a Christian-based hymn, rather more than "Deutschland über Alles"?! (Though we use that tune for hymns, eg "Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose Word cannot be broken Formed thee for His own abode..." - that's from memory.)

Well, back to the grammar book. There are several options as the copyright has expired for that book:

  • scan it and put the images somewhere on the web.
  • scan it and give the scans to distributed proofreaders. They will take care of OCRing the scans and they will have people to proofread the OCRs. Then you can put it to wikisource or to project gutenberg, and it would be available for everyone for free.
I've just had a look at the PGDP. As I'm a professional proofreader with access to scanner, including OCR, I could probably do much of it myself. Certainly quicker than typing!

So much for tonight,

kind regards,

Heiko Evermann 21:53, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

One more info about distributed proofreaders takatā

Hi Robin,

you wrote: "I've just had a look at the PGDP. As I'm a professional proofreader with access to scanner, including OCR, I could probably do much of it myself. Certainly quicker than typing!"

pgdp works in several steps. If you can do the scanning and the initial OCRing, that is nice. The real advantage of pgdp is that each page will be proofread by at least two different people. That increases the likelihood of detecting the errors. If you want to proofread hundreds of pages alone, I think that after some time you will no longer spot the errors. Besides it is much quicker than doing it all alone. Why not give it a try?

Kind regards,

Heiko Evermann

I noticed that there are a few umlauts instead of macrons around here - as in 'Tupato' which links to the disclaimer. I have put a Babel code mi-3 on my page. I found the Maori wiki thru the English one (where I am also called Kahuroa) - strangely enough the Babel codes there are different - there is a level 4 for near-native speakers. I have been trying to improve the Maori page there as it was a bit tourist-broshurey before. Kahuroa 10:03, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I've already responded on the macrons. Babel: The "en:" diverged from the standard in creating the "level 4"; for some time I've been trying to interest people in sticking to the meta: and commons: standards. Robin Patterson 12:22, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Te Aroha (taone) takatā

Am thinking of adding a page about Te Aroha township (in Maori) - the town actually originated as a Maori-initiated project and I have quite a bit of info about the founders. Then I might translate that article for the English wikipedia. Kahuroa 10:03, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I had already created (in your article) a link for Te Aroha (taone). Haere! Robin Patterson 12:22, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Interwiki links takatā

Thanks for the comments. I agree that putting all PI links at the top is too obscure, but having en at the top seems like a major convenience for the users of this site for obvious reasons. A preferred order of interwiki links is already established by other wikis, such as he.wikipedia.org (using en, ar, then all others). The usual phonetic sequence is still inconsistent (e.g. "ja:" sorted by J). As editors "break" the sequence, bots and other editors can correct them. There would be a need to tell the bot operators of the site's prefered sequence, and I am still trying to remember where ... — Zigger 19:35, 11 Kohi-tātea 2006 (UTC)

namespaces takatā

Robin, sorry for not explaining what I was doing, and thanks for noticing. I've been playing with the MediaWiki source code for a while, and I sometimes forget that not everyone looks for that kind of pain. :) At some stage soon (after we get the few major UI parts done), I expect to be discussing translating namespaces, which has a few more side-effects than local messages. One of the namespaces is Project, which is currently localised to Wikipedia, or more likely, to "{{SITENAME}}". Using "Project:" means that links will always work regardless of the local naming, so it's good for links to other sites. Using "{{ns:project}}:" instead has the advantage that it will always display the local namespace name which reads better on non-English sites when rendered. It is supposedly slower, but that is acceptable for the smaller 90% of sites, like here. — Zigger 04:08, 13 Kohi-tātea 2006 (UTC)

==Te Aroha== - minor typo thing Could you have a look at the References section of the Te Aroha article - there's some kind of error in the code which is manifesting at the end of the Korimako reference as a mi Te Aroha in bold type.

Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei takatā

We have a page called Ngāti Whātua Ō Orakei. Would you be able to change this to Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei? The Lawrence Makoare page links to it but I edited the name of the link there when I translated the page ... I thought I might be a bit noob to try a Nekehia just yet. Thanks Kahuroa 09:50, 17 Kohi-tātea 2006 (UTC)

Hi Robin Yes it was me! in a panic trying to get something up on the site before I went to work this morning. Only just got the go ahead after emailing Angela. Do feel free to help me out if you have a spare moment!! I just want to spend the next two weeks getting the structure of the site clear for people to build on so they dont get lost and discouraged too early, and to import stuff from Wikipedia so they get some idea of where it might be going. Lifeartist 20:19, 31 Kohi-tātea 2006 (UTC)

Hi again Robin Employers? - they are a distraction from the real business!!!!! Thanks for the welcome and the input - much appreciated. As were Angela's efforts in moving my old pages over- it saved me a load of work transferring stuff across. I take it that there is nothing left in the way now. Sorry, I don't remember whether I've ever looked up "pātauranga". Maybe you can get a feel for what it's trying to say by looking at the English equivalent page en:? - No, fr: is better - the paragraphs starting from "Arts"; but they don't have a main heading. The idea (which we may well modify once we get thousands of articles) is to give an outline of the scope of the encyclopedia with subjects that may interest a casual visitor at first glance.
By the way, I'm pleased to see "Tino Pai" replaced; when I looked that up I could see that it meant something nearer to "very special and dear" than the "particular/selected" that it means here.
Robin Patterson 10:55, 12 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that - I have looked up pātauranga everywhere I can think of - I hope it isn't a typo for mātauranga? Kahuroa 04:31, 13 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

"Pukapuka Taki Pātauranga" was a typo takatā

I looked at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page_alternate_%28Classic_2004%29 - the en. Wiki main page as of 2004 and realised that that was the basis of our Hau Kāinga page. The headings equivalent to our 'Pukapuka Taki Pātauranga' and 'Iwi Whānui' were 'Encyclopedia' and 'Community.' I retranslated Community, since Iwi Whānui isnt quite right for that. Then I looked up 'Encyclopedia' in various M. dictionaries, and in the Ngata dictionary it is 'Pukapuka Taki Mātauranga'. So that explains where the mystery Pātauranga came from - a typo!!! I retranslated that heading as Mātāpunenga in accordance with what we call ourselves. Kahuroa 10:01, 14 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

Great sleuthing, which I should have been able to think of because I was getting familiar with "en" in early 2004. "Mātāpunenga" is straight from Te Matatiki (like a lot of words I've used), so I hope Haami's crowd starts taking a serious interest. Robin Patterson 10:15, 14 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)

CommonsTicker takatā

CommonsTicker is a system to track images from Commons in each Wikipedia. In this link you can see an active CommonsTicker. There are few images from Commons in mi.wiki but the system can be useful in the future. If you agree I request CommonsTicker in Meta and configure Māori version here. This is the page of Duesentrieb tools. "Most of the run on the Toolserver on a live copy of the project databases". The toolserver copy of the english wikipedia is still corrupt and outdated. For that reason, there is not en.wiki CommonsTicker. --Prevert(talk) 21:43, 6 Pipiri 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to chat with you about Wikipedia of your language. Would you kindly drop me your email or IM (Skype, MSN, AIM or ICQ)? It wouldn't take more than ten minutes, but it would help enormously for us to understand the overall trust-based social landscape of Wikipedia. Thank you!

Sitenotice takatā

For some reason our sitenotice appears on every page - unlike that of the English Wiki where it only appears on the main page. I was thinking that if we could stop this happening I could remake the sitenotice on the model of the one currently appearing on the Engl wiki, so that it only appeared on Hau Kāinga, with links on the right side to high-level categories (for now) to be replaced with portals (eventually). Just that it wouldn't look right if that appeared on the top of every article. I guess there is some master template somewhere that sets the layout of the pages? Kahuroa 00:30, 26 Pipiri 2006 (UTC)

CommonsTicker: new version, new features takatā

Hello. A new version of CommonsTicker will be rolled out soon (probably tomorrow). Please have an eye on what the bot is doing, and report any problems to m:User_talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker. Some of the changes are:

  • the ticker can now post warnings to the talk page of articles that are using "endangered" images. This is not enabled per default, and you can select for which namespaces it is done. If you want this feature, please request it at m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Change_Requests.
  • in append mode, there are now three empty template parameters: status, editor, and notic. The ticker does not use them itself, but you can use them in the TickerEntry template, for example to strike through entries that have been fixed. en:wikinews has already been using this for a while now.
  • if the ticker fails to post an update, a warning is posted to your and the ticker's talk page. In append mode, the ticker will also re-try to post the update on the next pass. Until now, failed updates where simply ignored.
  • edit summaries become a bit more informative.

I hope these changes will help to make CommonsTicker more used and more useful.

On a related note: you may have noticed that on long pages, entries near the bottom of the page are sometimes not expanded but rendered just as {{TickerEntry}} or similar. This is due to a new limit to template expansion - see bugzilla:7005. To avoid it, try to keep the page short and/or try to simplify the TickerEntry template.

CommonsTicker: Ticker Trouble takatā

Hello

As you may have noticed, there have been some problems with CommonsTicker lately:

  • first, the toolserver was down. After it was back up, we had to wait for fresh database dumps.
  • also, many updates where failing because ticker pages where growing too large. Updates that went through half-way somtimes also caused entries to be posted multiple times, making the problem worse.
  • when I tried to improve performance, I introduced a bug that caused the ticker to post trash sometimes. I disabled the ticker again when I was told about it, and I have fixed all effected pages yesterday (I hope I didn't miss any).

To sort this out completely, I have to rewrite parts of CommonsTicker. For now, I will enable the ticker again for most wikis, but not for the ones that where having most trouble - namely de-wikipedia, en-wikinews, eo-wikipedia, es-wikipedia, fr-wikipedia, ja-wikipedia, ru-wikipedia, simple-wikipedia and zh-wikipedia. I'll have to investigate those more closely.

So please keep an eye on CommonsTicker in the next days - if there is any more trouble, please tell me, preferrably on meta:User_talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker.
