I got this txt message this morning: "Hei pukio mornng" I'm sure it is maori, just I don't know what it means. Guessing hei means hey? Maori translation needed

Hi guys. I'm actually a non-Maori speaker, but I'm just wondering if any of you would translate the following passages into Maori:

"Want to know about Malay? The Malay language is of Austronesian stock, spoken mainly in the Malay Archipelago of Southeast Asia namely the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Southern Thailand, the Southern Philippines and even as far as Christmas Island in Australia. The language achieved the status of lingua franca in the region during the height of the Malaccan Sultanate in the 15th and 16th century. As of late the importance of Malay as a language is being noted worldwide."

Pānui: Wiktionary Māori

He pānui tēnei kia mōhio ai koutou mō te āhua o tērā o ngā wikipedia, o te Wiktionary Māori. Tāku nei whakaaro, he koretake rawa, pai ake kia mukua. Ko te take he takahi i te mana o te reo rangatira, nā te mea he tāpepa rawa te reo o taua paetukutuku. He kaikōrero Pākehā katoa ngā tāngata i tuhituhi ngā pānui. Ka nui taku whakamā, he kino rawa te reo.

There is a very small project called Maori Wiktionary. I am going to propose on Meta that it be closed. The reasons are

• That it is not working and is not attracting enough interest to warrant keeping it going. It depends I think on this project as a source of editors, but this project has also been pretty static and shows little sign of kicking into real life and will not be able to spark anything at Wiktionary Māori for a long time to come if ever.
• The home page is in English, not in Māori - because it has never attracted Māori speakers
• The menus are in a mix of broken Māori and English, mainly English
• The Māori that is used on the site is embarrassingly bad. It was written by English speakers who had never even learnt Māori, and were using dictionaries. One example, the link to Special Pages is called "Tino Pai". That means "Very good".
• The quality of the language is damning for a dictionary site - because it also reflects on the quality of the entries such as they are.
• It would be better to delete the site and start it over again afresh if native speakers of Māori began showing an interest.

Narwhal

They're arctic animals. I rather doubt that Māori would have a word for them, since they would not have encountered them. I don't see anything in the online dictionary I looked at. Their name would therefore be a transliteration from the English, but it would take an expert to decide what that transliteration would be. I suggest you make the article using the English name (assuming you can write in Māori sufficiently well to create the article), and someone can move it later. However. such an article is low priority for this language Wikipedia.-gadfium 19:07, 16 Āperira 2010 (UTC)

Actually, couldn't one just translate the elements of the name (and create a redirect from the English name) (or did some Maori language council somewhere rule that all words which didn't exist in Maori were to be borrowed)? I happen to know that "nar" means "corpse" (so called for the whale's skin colour). I don't speak very good Maori (that is to say, I don't have my head thoroughly around the grammar, and I do not have a large vocabulary), but I can try (any one gets better with practice, I think)! It is not appropriate for this site to coin new "Māori" words. We should let experts decide how "narwhal" should be rendered; my guess is as a modification of the English word, not as a direct translation of the meaning of "corpsewhale".-gadfium 08:35, 17 Āperira 2010 (UTC)

gadfium is right, it is inappropriate for us to make up Māori words. And its not appropriate to transliterate from English because that is frowned on by the Maori Language Commission, who would be the right body to decide on this. As for translating the elements, as far as I am aware there is no generic word for whale to start from — even if that was appropriate to do, which it isn't. The pun was good... Despite both youse's sayings, I still think that if one is not allowed to cover ground which has not been covered, then that's pretty sad... If the people at the Maori Language Commission are any good, then I doubt they'd really get ticked if they found out someone had improvised where they had done nothing (and if they did, maybe they're not even the kind of people I want to pay heed to, anyway). I am not so much interested in the narwhal as I want to write an article about it (that is to say, I want to write an article about it - therefore I wanted to write an article 'bout it. Why else does one write an article on a site that works off voluntary work? But I did not know it's name, so I asked, and when I was answered that Maori had not an adequate word, I suggested a manner of making up for it; unfortunately, few people these days do appreciate neologisms and linguistic self-sufficiency - including many modern speakers of Maori, it seems, judging by such borrowings as "kirini, motokā, Niu Tireni, miraka, etc." - nor (do they appreciate) improvisation). Nonetheless, since this is apparently sacred ground touchable only by the Maori "experts" (I do look more across at such people than up to them - that is to say, I have my own more-than-fair share of linguistic knowledge, not necessarily concentrated in Maori, though), I will leave it... On this site, anyway; but perhaps I will contribute in another way not so remotely alien to Maori thought, language, and culture...
